Parents Can Ruin Their Child's Summer: A Camp Director's Perspective
As the director of Swift Nature Camp for nearly three decades, I've witnessed firsthand the joy and transformation that summer camp can bring to children's lives. However, I've also seen how well-meaning parents can inadvertently undermine their child's summer experience by making the wrong camp choices. Here are some common mistakes parents inavoidably make when selecting a summer camp:
1. Ignoring Their Child's Interests: Parents often choose a residential summer camp based on their own preferences or what they think their child should enjoy, rather than considering their child's interests and passions. This can lead to a lack of enthusiasm and engagement from the child.
2. Overlooking Camp Values: Some parents prioritize factors like convenience or cost over the camp's values and philosophy. However, a mismatch between the camp's values and the family's values can result in a dissonant experience for the child. This can often result in children returning home with a personality that is less than you would like
3. Focusing Solely on Facilities: While state-of-the-art facilities may be impressive, they do not necessarily guarantee a quality camp experience. Parents should look beyond the amenities and consider factors such as the quality of staff, programming, and the camp's approach to child development.
4. Disregarding Feedback: Parents may dismiss negative reviews or feedback about a camp, assuming it won't apply to their child's experience. However, it's essential to heed warnings from other families and trust their insights.
5. Overparenting: Hovering or micromanaging from afar can hinder a child's ability to fully immerse themselves in the camp experience and develop independence. It's essential for parents to trust the camp staff and allow their child the space to grow.
6. Not Reading: Parents for some reason feel camp has 2 requirments Paying and Packing. These are the least important aspects of picking a camp. Read everything about the camp you are selecting.
How Swift Nature Camp Responds To The Above Issues::
1. **Ignoring Their Child's Interests:** At Swift Nature Camp, we understand the importance of catering to each child's unique interests and passions. Our diverse range of nearly 100 activities, including outdoor adventures, arts and crafts and Lego, ensures that every camper finds something they love. This is why on our website, we have videos specifically for the campers to get a feel about SNC. We believe, by offering daily choices of activities, we empower campers to explore their interests and discover new talents.
2. **Overlooking Camp Values:** Our camp's values are at the heart of everything we do. From fostering a love and respect for nature to promoting teamwork and inclusivity, our program is designed to align with the values of families who prioritize character development and personal growth. By immersing campers in an environment that reflects old fashioned values, we create a cohesive and supportive community where every child feels valued and understood. We belive Kindness matters at SNC.
3. **Focusing Solely on Facilities:** While our facilities are well-maintained and provide a comfortable setting for campers, it's the people and programs that truly set us apart. Our dedicated staff members are carefully selected for their expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment to nurturing each child's potential. From trained counselors to experienced activity leaders, our SNC team ensures that every aspect of the camp experience is enriching and rewarding. We have learned over the years campers first come to camp for the activities and the environment, but they return for how camp makes them feel.
4. **Disregarding Feedback:** At Swift Nature Camp, we value feedback from campers and families alike. We actively seek input through surveys, parent meetings, and ongoing communication channels to continuously improve our program and address any concerns. By listening to the needs and preferences of our community, we can adapt and evolve to better serve our campers and families. Maybe that is why we have been doing camp for nearly 30 years.
5. **Overparenting:** We recognize the importance of fostering independence and self-reliance in our campers. That's why we encourage parents to trust our experienced staff and allow their child the freedom to explore and grow in a safe and supportive environment. Our structured yet flexible program provides opportunities for campers to make choices, take risks, and learn from their experiences, helping them develop confidence and resilience that will serve them well beyond their time at camp.
6.**Not Reading:** At Swift anture Camp our website is loaded with information. We want to work with your families for years and want to be part of your childs upbringing. The best way we feel to do this is to inform you as much as possible. Weather it be Zoom meeting for new families or in person get togethers before camp starts. Join the SNC Family.
Lastly, selecting the right summer camp requires thoughtful consideration and prioritizing the child's needs and interests above all else. By avoiding these common pitfalls, parents can ensure their child has a positive and enriching summer camp experience. Trust me, as someone who has dedicated their life to creating memorable camp experiences, making the right choice can make all the difference in your child's summer.
Plese give me a call and we can talk more about camp and your child.

Embracing Uncertainty: How Overnight Summer Camp Prepares Children for Life's Journey
As the director of Swift Nature Camp for nearly 30 years, I've seen countless children embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and growth amidst the uncertainty of overnight summer camp. In Maggie Jackson's book, "Uncertain: The Wisdom and Wonder of Being Unsure," she delves into the profound lessons uncertainty can teach us. I couldn't agree more with her insights, especially in the context of camp.
At SNC, we believe that uncertainty is not something to be feared, but rather embraced as a catalyst for growth and resilience. Here's how the uncertainty of overnight summer camp helps children prepare for life's challenges:
**1. Adaptability:** Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and learning to adapt is a valuable skill. At camp, children are constantly faced with new situations, from making friends with bunkmates to trying out adventurous activities like rock climbing or kayaking. Through these experiences, they learn to embrace change and adapt with confidence.
**2. Problem-Solving:** Uncertainty often presents opportunities for creative problem-solving. Whether it's figuring out how to set up a tent or navigating a challenging team-building activity, camp encourages children to think critically, explore different solutions, and persevere until they find success. These problem-solving skills are invaluable in the face of life's obstacles.
**3. Building Confidence:** Stepping outside of one's comfort zone is essential for personal growth. At SNC, children are encouraged to try new things, take risks, and push their limits. Each small victory—whether it's conquering a fear of the dark on a nighttime hike or performing in a talent show—builds confidence and self-esteem.
**4. Resilience:** Life is full of setbacks, but it's how we respond to adversity that defines us. At camp, children learn resilience—the ability to bounce back from failure, learn from mistakes, and keep moving forward. Whether it's dealing with homesickness or facing a setback in a team challenge, camp teaches children that setbacks are temporary and that they have the strength to overcome them.
Overnight Summer Camp is full of fun, friendships and cool activities. Yet, uncertainty is abound, this might seem scary to Moms and campers alike. Overnight summer camp provides children with invaluable opportunities for growth and learning. By embracing uncertainty, children develop adaptability, problem-solving skills, confidence, and resilience—qualities that will serve them well as they navigate life's journey.
Warm regards,
Lonnie

From communicating with fellow staff members to collaborating with campers on group projects, you'll sharpen your ability to communicate clearly, listen actively, and adapt your message to different audiences.

For many parents, sending their children to residential summer camp is an important part of their child's development and growth. While some may view camp as a mere vacation or break from the daily routine, the benefits of overnight camp go much deeper.
First and foremost, overnight residential camps provides a unique opportunity for children to gain independence and responsibility. Away from the comfort and structure of home, campers are forced to navigate new situations and make decisions on their own. This teaches valuable life skills such as problem-solving, time management, and decision-making.
Additionally, overnight camp allows children to form new friendships and build a sense of community. In a world where children are often isolated by technology, camp provides a chance for face-to-face social interaction and connection with others. This can lead to increased self-esteem and confidence, as well as a support network for children to lean on during difficult times.
Furthermore, overnight camp offers a wide range of activities and experiences that are often not available in a child's daily life. From outdoor adventures such as hiking and rock climbing, to artistic and creative pursuits such as painting and music, camp provides a chance for children to explore new interests and passions. This can lead to increased self-discovery and a greater sense of self-worth.
Overnight camp also provides a unique opportunity for children to disconnect from the distractions of technology and fully immerse themselves in the present moment. Without the constant pull of screens and social media, campers are free to focus on their surroundings and the activities at hand. This can lead to increased mindfulness and an appreciation for the natural world.
Finally, overnight camp provides a chance for children to learn important values such as teamwork, respect, and perseverance. Through group activities and challenges, campers are taught the importance of working together and supporting one another. These lessons can have a lasting impact on a child's character and future success.
Overall, the benefits of overnight camp are numerous and varied. From building independence and forming new friendships, to exploring new interests and learning important values, overnight camp offers a unique and valuable experience for children. For many parents, sending their children to camp is an investment in their child's future and well-being. It is always best to check with the camp directors that they offer what your family is looking for in your childe development. At Swift Nature Camp Lonnie & Jeff welcome your phone call 630-654-8036
Sleep away summer camps can be a wonderful Christmas gift for a number of reasons. These camps provide children and teenagers with an opportunity to have a fun and rewarding summer experience away from home, while also giving parents a break from the daily responsibilities of caring for their children. In addition, sleep away camps can create lasting memories and build family traditions, making them a great gift for children and teenagers.
One reason why Residential Summer Camps can be such a wonderful gift is that they provide children and teenagers with a chance to have a fun and rewarding summer experience away from home. At these camps, children and teenagers can participate in a wide range of activities, such as sports, arts, outdoor adventure, and more. These activities can help children and teenagers learn new skills, make new friends, and develop independence.
For example, a child who enjoys sports might have the opportunity to participate in soccer, basketball, or other team sports at a sleep away camp. This can not only help them improve their athletic skills, but also teach them valuable lessons about teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance. Similarly, a child who enjoys the arts might have the opportunity to participate in drama, music, or visual arts at a sleep away camp. This can help them develop their creative skills and express themselves in new and exciting ways.
Another reason why children's summer camps can be such a wonderful gift is that they provide parents with a break from the daily responsibilities of caring for their children. For many parents, raising children can be a challenging and demanding task, and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed or stressed. Sleep away camps can give parents a much-needed break from these responsibilities, allowing them to focus on their own needs and recharge their batteries.
For example, a parent who has been feeling burnt out from work or caring for their children might appreciate the opportunity to take some time for themselves while their child is at sleep away camp. This can give them the chance to relax, pursue their own interests, or simply have some time to themselves. Additionally, sleep away camps can be a great way for parents to reconnect with each other and spend quality time together, as they are no longer responsible for the daily care of their children.
Finally, sleep away summer camps can be a great way to create lasting memories and build family traditions. Many people have fond memories of their time at sleep away camp, and these experiences can be a wonderful gift to give to a child or teenager. For example, a child who goes to sleep away camp might come home with new skills, stories, and memories that they will treasure for years to come. Additionally, sending a child to sleep away camp can be a great way to start a family tradition that can be passed down from generation to generation.
Overall, sleep away summer camps can be a wonderful gift for children and teenagers, as they provide a fun, educational, and rewarding experience that can help them grow and develop. Whether children and teenagers are interested in sports, the arts, or outdoor adventure, there is a sleep away camp that can meet their needs and interests. By giving the gift of a sleep away summer camp, parents can provide their children with an experience that they will never forget, while also giving themselves a much-needed break.
See if Swift Nature Camp is the right camp for your camper. www.SNC.Camp
For over a hundred years Ovenight Summer Camps have been providing outdoor fun and personal growth for America's youth. 2020 was the year of exceptions, resulting in 85% of the summer camps remaining closed. At Swift Nature Camp in Minong Wi. camp was on and COVID FREE. Swift Nature Camp attracts bright, curious and creative children with passion for nature and the outdoors. At camp, they tackle exciting adventures, and gain confidence and independence with their outdoor explorations.
But, 2020 was different, many long standing SNC camp families were understandably reluctant to send their children to camp. Yet, with so many camps closed, many other families who did not know SNC, sent their children, making the summer of 2020 one of the busiest summers in 25 years.
By creating a safe bubble, Jeff & Lonnie Lorenz knew that the children would appreciate camp more in 2020 than ever before. Jeff says "Despite all the rules to keep covid out, like isolating, masks, washing, cleaning and staying in pods it was still an amazing experience and much better than being in the basement looking at a screen."
After the in camp isolation and masks wearing, the happiest day at camp was the day that camp was declared COVID free and the "safe bubble" was working. Campers were crazy with excitement. It meant that kids were again allowed to be kids and not worry at all about a pandemic. Swift Nature Camp was again a safe place.
In early May 2020 the government had given little support to help camp understand the best practices for summer camps to be open. Fortunately, the ACA (American Camp Association) had contracted with an outside environmental firm to put together a best practices plan to keep campers safe and reduce the spread of COVID. The plan worked flawlessly at Swift Nature Camp and never was there a reason to suspect a COVID case. In the summer, camps were a testing ground for many of the COVID plans like the "Safe Bubble" that the NBA used successfully in the fall of 2020. Camps helped lead the way that outdoors is a limiting factor in transfer of COVID-19.
So camp was coming to a close, we were sitting outside with our staff and we asked about their after summer plans. Not surprisingly, many colleges were doing classes online. So the question came up, "would you like to do school at summer camp?". Again, pandemonium erupted with the option of being at camp covid free, playing with kids and doing school. Thus was born the Fall School Camp that took place later that fall for 6 weeks. Being that we felt comfortable tackling COVID all that was needed was rearranging the camp schedule so students could get the school work they brought from home completed on time. Many families loved the concept of giving their child the ability to have face to face contact along with outdoor exercise rather than staying home doing school work in isolation. The kids loved it. Because the group was small, it became more like family. Lonnie, the Camp Director says "It was amazing the students were so well behaved and friendly towards each other, their appreation for having such an opportunity was evident". Two of the greatest days were the day it snowed 4 inches and stayed around for 3 weeks and spending Halloween at camp including pumpkin carving and party at night.
As we move to 2021, with a COVID vaccine slowly rolling out, it is clear that all of us have become more knowledgeable about the virus. As a residential summer camp that blazed the trail in 2020, this year will seem much easier. Today, we wait for the spring to give us more information, allowing more informed decisions to be made. Safety is camps major concern, evaluation will take place and perhaps there will be less isolation & masks and more fun and friendships in the summer on the horizon.
Ramblings of a Camp Director
It was 1966 and it was my first year at Camp Minocqua, a boys camp in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Dr. John P. Sprague, founded Camp Minocqua for Boys in 1905 on Tomahawk Lake. The history of camp was part of the camp culture. Historically, camp was designed to taking young boys out of the cities and the finer things in life and allowing us boys to live out in nature with others boys, while our counselors just seemed like older brothers.
Such was the beginning of residential boys camps in America. Later camps for girls were established by the Girl Scouts of America and Camp Fire girls. Sleepaway summer camps continued round World War I when many charities opened summer camps for working-class children giving them a chance to get a way from urban life.
Anyway, here I was at a residential camp where I would be staying for 7 weeks, that was a long time away from my parents. Was I ready? Absolutely not. I cried often during those first few weeks and when the storms came I was even more scared. But, I made friends that I still remember today, maybe better than my school friends. Camp gave me a chance to make decisions without my parents. Some were good and made me feel great, like when I got to name the sailboat “Stormy Weather”. Others were not so good and resulted in me taking a bite out of a bar of Ivory soap. But they were my decisions and the natural consequence fell where they would. From this independence I learned that when I make decisions and fail, I learn more than when my decisions result in success.
I returned to Camp Minocqua for 7 summers giving me almost one complete year living at camp. So I guess it was not all that surprising when at the age of 38 I got this idea to start a summer camp. Shortly there after I opened Swift Nature Camp. Yes, some of camp Minocqua’s history can be seen at SNC but times have changed and so has the overnight summer camp experience. No longer is Ivory soap cut in wedges nor are kids left unsupervised. No, Swift Nature Camp is an intentional place, filled with support and encouragement, a place that comforts children on their journey to adult hood. We help give kids the skills they need to be productive parts of society. Sleepaway camp should be part of every child’s summer.
Now is the time to Commit! You have heard about all the benefits Overnight Summer Camp can provide a child. Still, it seems a strange concept to send your child away to Swift Nature Camp and in other people's care. Yet time and time again, parents see that their child returns home different (better) than before he or she left. How can this be? What is this Camp Magic?
As a parent, these are the questions that went through my head as I sent my child to a different overnight summer camp. Does sending my kid away mean I do not love them? Does it mean I am selfish? Does it mean I am a BAD parent?
Actually sending your child to Overnight summer camp means none of these things. Often parents need to hear again all the benefits of summer camp, here are a few:
9. Kids are active – These days a child's life is sedentary in school, online and inside. Every moment at camp is filled with motion, from play to learning or even walking to the bathroom.
8. Experience successes – Camp's main goal is to build kids up. So at SNC we find what kids can succeed and that helps them feel more confident.
7. Gain resiliency – Life is filled with setbacks. At camp setbacks can be handled in a positive way. For instance, a group may have a difficult canoe trip, yet together they persevered and made it. Knowing you can make it is an amazing lesson.
6. Unplug – Technology has taken over our life. No time in history have children been so connected to it. In the old days kids watched TV for 2-3 hours a day now a screen is watched 7-9 hrs a day. Get back to real connections.
5. Independent – This day and age kids are scheduled most of the day. Camp gives children the ability to make choices for themselves. A skill needed in life. Wrong decisions can be gently handled and right decisions applauded by peers and non parental units.
4. Play – In nature animals learn by play. We all love watching the wolf pups play, but they are really getting ready for life. Same is true with children, they learn by having unorganized free play. Something that was a staple in kids growing up in the past. Camp still provides this in a safe, child friendly atmosphere.
3. Social skills – Living in a communal setting, like camp, provides amazing opportunities for children to learn personal skills like, empathy, resolving disagreements, teamwork and healthy communication.
2. Enjoy nature – Kids lives have become an indoor life. Nature is missing and all the research shows this is having a negative effect on today's kids. Higher stress, obesity and insecurity. Nature supports healthy child development and enriches kid’s perception of the world.
1. Friendships–Swift Nature Camp has only one mission to help children be their best. We do this in a fun and supportive way. By building friendships with people that truly care. we help child make better friends. Campers will tell you their best friends are at camp. Why? When you live with people, you learn to accept them, you build tolerance and over time your difference become bonds. The result is a summer family.
So as you are thinking about the adventure your child will be on this summer, don't rule out the Northwoods of Wisconsin and Swift Nature Camp.
